The Testimonial Capture Script
Get client testimonials that actually convert
Why most testimonials don't work
“Great company, would recommend!” persuades no one — it could be about anyone, written by anyone. A testimonial converts when it carries specifics: the worry beforehand, the moment of doubt, the detail that surprised them. You don’t get those by asking for “a review.” You get them by asking the right questions, in the right order.
Pro Tip
Ask conversationally and let them ramble — the gold is always in the rambling. You're collecting raw material, not sound bites. The sound bites get found in the edit (or the quote you pull for your website).
The five questions, in order
1. “What made you choose us over the other options?”
Opens with a decision story — exactly what the next prospect is living through.
2. “What were you most concerned about before the project started?”
The money question. Their fear is your next client's fear — and hearing it resolved is the single most persuasive moment in any testimonial.
3. “What stood out during the project itself?”
Pulls process details: communication, cleanliness, crew. Specifics are what make proof believable.
4. “How would you describe the finished result?”
Let them sell the outcome in their own words — emotion included.
5. “Who would you recommend us to?”
Ends with an endorsement aimed at your exact target client.
If you're filming it
Action steps
- Film in the finished space — the work becomes the backdrop and the proof
- Have them look at you, not the lens — you're having a conversation, the camera is eavesdropping
- Ask them to fold your question into the answer ('What worried us most was…') so clips stand alone
- Capture 2–3 minutes of them walking the space afterward — that's your b-roll
- One take is enough; authenticity beats polish in testimonials every time
Timing is everything
Ask within 24–48 hours of completion, while the transformation is still novel and the enthusiasm real. The walkthrough at handoff is the perfect moment: they’re seeing the finished result for the first time, and that reaction can’t be re-created later.
